Philatelist Michael Richard Sefi LVO, RDP, FRPSL (born 11 December 1943), stands as one of the most influential figures in modern British philately, remembered for his stewardship, scholarship, and lifelong devotion to the world of stamps. From childhood, Sefi’s fascination with stamps was sparked by his grandfather, a quiet beginning that would later blossom into a defining passion. After returning to the hobby in his early thirties— initially as a way to ease professional stress—he developed a deep expertise in the early issues of King George V. His professional life as a chartered accountant eventually gave way to a distinguished philatelic career. Sefi became an active leader within the Great Britain Philatelic Society, serving as president during two separate terms, and contributed extensively to the Royal Philatelic Society London, where he sat on Council for 15 years. A pivotal moment came in 1996 when he was appointed Deputy Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection, assisting Charles Goodwyn. His meticulous work helped accelerate the mounting of the George VI collection and supported major exhibitions around the world. He played a central role in relocating the Royal Collection from Buckingham Palace to St James’s Palace in 1999—an undertaking requiring both curatorial precision and logistical mastery.
In 2003, Sefi succeeded Goodwyn as Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in 2018. Under his leadership, the Collection continued to be shared with global audiences, including through The Queen’s Own exhibition at the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C. in 2004.
His contributions were recognized at the highest levels: in 2013, He signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2012. He was appointed Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) for his service to the Royal Household. He was also a proud Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London (FRPSL).
A Legacy of Stewardship and Scholarship
Michael Sefi will be remembered not only for his technical expertise but for his generosity toward students, researchers, and fellow collectors. He welcomed scholars into the Royal Philatelic Collection, encouraged new generations of philatelists, and upheld the highest standards of conservation and presentation.
His legacy lives on in:
- the meticulously curated Royal Philatelic Collection he helped shape
- the exhibitions he brought to international audiences
- the societies he strengthened through leadership and mentorship
- the countless collectors he inspired through his passion and precision
Michael Sefi’s life reminds us that philately is more than the study of stamps—it is the preservation of history, culture, and human connection. His dedication elevated the field, enriched the Royal Collection, and left an enduring mark on global philately.
