The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) is delighted to announce that they have been awarded Accreditation status by the Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) for its Museum of the Post Office in the Community at Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge.
The Accreditation follows a long and thorough examination process by the MLA.
The Museum of the Post Office in the Community, which opened to the public in October 2009, charts the development of the Post Office and its services, illuminating the organisation’s role within the British Community. The story is told through the unique collections of The British Postal Museum & Archive, and objects on display range from a five-wheeled cycle, a BSA Bantam motorcycle, letter boxes, home safes and an early telegram. It is the first contemporary exhibition at Blists Hill and has been a great success in its first year with more than 100,000 visitors.
The MLA’s Museum Accreditation Scheme sets nationally agreed standards for all museums in the UK. The BPMA has proven that the Museum of the Post Office in the Community measures up, meeting the guidelines on how its run, how it looks after its collections and the services it provides its visitors.
Adrian Steel, Director of the BPMA commented:
“Being awarded Accreditation is an impressive achievement and shows the high standard and service that The British Postal Museum & Archive provides, and acknowledges the hard work of its volunteers and staff”.
